Supreme Court Suspends President Tinubu Over Rivers Emergency Rule

Abuja, April 1, 2025 – In a shocking turn of events, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has announced the immediate suspension of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what it describes as “constitutional overreach” regarding the controversial emergency rule imposed in Rivers State.

The ruling comes after weeks of escalating tensions following the President’s decision to enforce emergency governance in Rivers. The court, in a unanimous decision, declared the move “a direct affront to the democratic fabric of the nation,” effectively putting Tinubu’s presidency on hold.

While the Constitution does provide for emergency rule in extreme situations, the Supreme Court argued that Tinubu bypassed due process and failed to obtain necessary legislative approval.

“This is the first time in Nigeria’s history that a sitting president has been suspended by the judiciary,” said constitutional lawyer Prof. Emeka Ibe. “It sets a powerful precedent that no one is above the law—not even the Commander-in-Chief.”

With Tinubu’s suspension, Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to assume leadership in an acting capacity, pending further legal clarifications.
