Zamora, Spain – July 3, 2025 – Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, has tragically died in a car accident early this morning near Zamora in northwestern Spain. His brother André also lost his life in the same incident.
According to Spanish state TV (TVE), local firefighters confirmed the crash occurred in the comarca of Sanabria on the A‑52 highway near kilometre 65. The vehicle apparently veered off the roadway and caught fire in the early hours of July 3. The regional emergency services (112 Castilla y León) responded to multiple calls around 00:35 CET, dispatching firefighting units, Guardia Civil traffic officers, paramedics including a mobile medical unit, and local health personnel.
Born 4 December 1996 in Porto, Jota starred for Liverpool since signing in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for around £41 million. He scored 47 goals in 123 league appearances and was a key figure in their 2024–25 Premier League title-winning side. He also earned 49 caps for Portugal, contributing to their UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025.
Jota had recently celebrated his marriage to Rute Cardoso on 22 June 2025, just ten days before the accident, and the couple leaves behind three young children.
The wider football world has been left reeling by the news—Liverpool FC, the Portuguese national team, and fans across Europe are grieving the sudden passing of one of the sport’s brightest attacking talents.
Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation are expected to issue official statements later today. The club will hold a moment of silence prior to their next match and may consider wearing black armbands or dedicating a tribute in the coming fixtures.
