Rivers State Reports Shocking 1,319 Cases of Violence Against Women in 2024 – Health Commissioner

The Rivers State Commissioner of Health reports that 1,319 cases of violence against women have been recorded.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, disclosed this in a statement on Monday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Dr. Oreh emphasized the importance of the annual campaign in raising awareness, educating the public, and driving meaningful actions to end gender-based violence. She highlighted the theme for this year, which focuses on strengthening unity and increasing investments in prevention programs to create safe environments for women and girls.

“This theme is a call to action for all sectors, including government, healthcare, education, and businesses, to contribute to ending gender-based violence by educating themselves, challenging harmful behaviors, and investing in prevention and empowerment programs,” she stated.

Dr. Oreh stressed that violence is preventable but requires sustained financial and social investment. She also highlighted the state’s commitment. Speaking further, she noted that health personnel across all 23 Local Government Areas have been trained to recognize and respond sensitively to cases of sexual and gender-based violence.

She urged the public to report cases promptly to the nearest health facility. “Everyone has a role to play. Educate yourselves and your families about gender-based violence, speak out against harmful behaviors, and support initiatives that aid survivors. By modeling respect in our own lives, we can influence positive change around us. Every action counts,” she added.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is observed globally each year. The 2024 theme, “Unite: Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” calls for collective action and investment.
