A retired Nigerian war veteran, Colonel Nasiru Salami, has said that he will never allow his children to join the Nigerian Army.

He said this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Mr Salami narrated his ordeal after being enlisted in the army in 1967 and sent to the battlefield during the Nigerian Civil War, after six weeks of training.
He said he suffered on the battlefield for 11 months between 1967 and 1970, and almost lost his right foot.
Furthermore, he said he went back to the field to continue the war after plastics were embedded in his foot.
After narrating his painful ordeal, he stated why he won’t allow his children join the army.
As reported by Channels, Salami said:
“For now, I will never recommend any of my children to join the Nigerian Army.
“I am their father and they are seeing me now that my life is not to their expectation.
“They would want me to be higher than this, full of joy and other things that would make them happy”. GNtv Reporters.
