Diogo Jota: How The Accident Happened -Police Reveals

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André, 26, tragically died early this morning in a devastating single-vehicle accident near Cernadilla in Zamora province.

According to the Guardia Civil, the pair were travelling in a Lamborghini on the A‑52 motorway just after 00:30 local time, overtaking when a tyre blowout caused the car to veer off the road and ignite in flames. Both occupants were killed instantly.

A statement from the Spanish authorities confirmed:

“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking. It then set on fire… Two people died.”

Emergency services—including Zamora Traffic Police, local fire brigades, and medical teams—responded to multiple emergency calls from the A‑52 at kilometre 65, near Cernadilla . Forensic teams have since transported the bodies to a mortuary in Zamora for formal identification.

Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation have expressed profound sorrow. The Federation described Diogo Jota as “an extraordinary person … with an infectious joy” and labelled the brothers’ deaths “irreparable losses for Portuguese football

Diogo Jota, who married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso just ten days earlier and leaves behind three young children, joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves. During his time at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped secure the 2024–25 Premier League title.
