5 Churches That Don’t Celebrate Christmas and Why

Christmas is widely celebrated by Christians to commemorate the birth of Jesus, and it is one of the most popular holidays around the world.

However, it’s not celebrated by all churches because of several reasons.

The reasons why they don’t celebrate it are largely historical and desire for rigorous and orthodox biblical observance.

According to a publication made by Vanguard on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, here are five churches that don’t celebrate Christmas and why.

1. Jehovah’s Witness

Jehovah’s Witnesses are among the biggest Christian organizations to desist from celebrating Christmas.

According to one of their popular books, Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom, Christmas had it’s origin in false religious beliefs and activities.

As a result, they decided not to celebrate it. Additionally, they affirm that the Holy Bible would have addressed it, if it was significant or important.

2. Seventh Day Adventist Church

This church worships on the Sabbath, instead of Sundays.

They argue that Jesus was not born in December and that the Bible does not advise Christians to celebrate his birth.

They also believe that Christmas had pagan origin. As a result, they don’t celebrate it.

3. Deeper Life Church

In 2013, the founder and general overseer of the church, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, openly said that his church doesn’t celebrate Christmas.

“We don’t celebrate Christmas. In actuality, it had an idolatrous origin”, he said.

He said Christmas songs are not written in the Bible, and that it has pagan roots.

Alternatively, the church holds an annual programme in October to commemorate Christ’s birth. The programme is called Freedom Day.

4. The God’s Kingdom Society (GKS)

GKS was founded in 1934 by St. Gideon Meriodere Urhobo

A Nigerian who broke with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, to restore what Urhobo considered to be authentic Christian practices.

GKS does not celebrate Christmas because they believe it has its origin in the Roman pagan celebration called Saturnalia.

5. Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM)

In 2019, the general overseer of the church, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, openly declared that they don’t celebrate Christmas because it’s not grounded in Christian theology.

Alternatively, the church organises a programme captioned “Power Must Change Hands” to commemorate the birth of Jesus. GNtv Reporters.
